Cinema and other arts is the title of a series of regular lectures presented by the musicologist Jan Špaček at the University Cinema Scala and organised by the Institute of Musicology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. During the 2019 Moravian Autumn festival, there will be two public lectures. The first is on Mieczysław Weinberg, a Polish-Russian composer of Jewish extraction, whose 100th birthday we will commemorate in December, and who is a subject of attention at this year’s festival. As part of the occasion, Weinberg’s opera The Passenger (1967/1968) will be screened. The film, made at the 2010 Bregenz Festival, shows the world premiere of the opera, directed by David Pountney with the Wiener Symphoniker and the Prague Philharmonic Choir and soloists including Michelle Breedt, Roberto Saccà and Elena Kelessidi, conducted by Teodor Currentzis.
